ABOUT

“Born of the rugged beauty of Canada's west coast, informed by jazz, brought up on rock and all kinds of guitar music. Composed with a complex love of simplicity. Authored from a place which is literary and personal.”

Born in Winnipeg Manitoba in 1987, Trevor Davies has spent most of his life as an independent musician on Vancouver Island. Largely self-taught on guitar and vocals, he led a rock band at fourteen which wrote original material and performed around the Cowichan Valley. As his songwriting developed, a more adventurous group called Freedom Toast was formed. They sought to write 100% of their own music, from the humorous to the earnestly progressive, as well as improvise together live on stage, while still in their teenage years.

The young experimental band released two professional recordings and played hundreds of shows including the Islands Folk Festival, VIEX, and other gigs typically reserved for grown-ups.

In 2005, Trevor enrolled in jazz performance at Vancouver Island University, where he studied with some of the best musicians in Canada, including: Buff Allen, Ken Lister, Myron Makepeace and jazz-guitar jedi Pat Coleman. Trevor has performed commercially with such talented musicians as Ian Finkel, The Nylons and the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

His first self-titled album, entitled Vanity Press, was released in 2011 prior to relocating to Montréal. The album is comprised mainly of material that has been accumulating for several years, (going back to the overlap with Freedom Toast) and has been performed with a variety of different musicians, or solo. These song-poems are based in personal experience and love, and are strongly influenced by external works of art. They betray a fascination with wordplay, people, nature, and the simplicity (yet emotional depth) of pop music. Over the years, and definitively with this release, the focus of Trevor’s music has shifted from the group collaboration of a jam band to composition and language, with an emphasis on elegance, authenticity, and personal emotive forces.

“All along the waterfront
I see the houses blow like grass
Offers that rescind and melt away
Like oven-heated glass…”
